Establishment of the Joint Doctoral Program for Sustainability Research (April 2019)
Tokyo University of Foreign Studies, Tokyo University of Agriculture and Technology and the University of Electro-Communications conceived of establishing a "Joint Doctoral Program for Sustainability Research" a new, interdisciplinary field that would be a collaboration between the three universities, in April 2019, and submitted a plan for its establishment to the Subcommittee on University Chartering of the Council for University Chartering and School Corporations, which is established in the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology, for review. On August 28, 2018, they received a response stating that the establishment of the major was "approved."

In order to train people who can contribute to solving the various issues facing international society, such as the environment and energy, production and consumption, labor, hunger, and poverty, the three universities will pool the strengths of their respective educational and research resources to train doctoral candidates through collaboration between the humanities and sciences.
