We came to Nature and Science Museum (@tuatmuseum) on the Koganei Campus!
This is Chardonnay rayon, mankind's first artificial fiber.
Rayon is a shiny man-made fiber used in clothing.
Until then, fibers had been made by processing natural raw materials such as cocoons, wool, and cotton, but Chardonnay rayon was the world's first artificially produced fiber, which led to the development of the textile industry.
The man who accomplished this feat was the French engineer Chardonnet.
While researching silkworms, he was inspired by the process in which silkworms eat mulberry leaves to produce silk, and was inspired to "produce fiber from wood," which led him to succeed in producing fiber from cellulose.
Wang attracted a great deal of attention when he exhibited at the 1889 Paris World's Fair.
After that, Chardonnay made many improvements with the aim of mass production.
However, it was not possible to completely remove the nitro groups contained in the raw materials used in Chardonnay rayon, resulting in a highly flammable fiber.
In fact, there was an incident where a dress made from this fiber caught fire, and production was discontinued before it was widely put into practical use.
Nevertheless, this was a major achievement in the subsequent development and advancement of artificial fibers, and today many different types of artificial fibers are developed, produced, and put into practical use.
There are only a few Chardonnay rayon pieces left today, so they're actually quite rare!
I hope you will come to Nature and Science Museum to see Chardonnay rayon, which was the first step in the development of artificial fibers that are now essential to our lives!
