This is the Nissan HR-II automatic silk-reeling machine on display at Nature and Science Museum (@tuatmuseum).
This machine can automate the process of spinning raw silk from cocoons.
The particularly great thing about this silk-reeling machine is its fineness control and automatic cocoon feeding and stringing!

First, let me explain fineness control.
Fineness control is the function of keeping the thickness of the reeled thread constant.
Until then, the thickness of the thread was controlled only by the number of cocoons used to reel one thread, but because the thickness of the thread from each cocoon varies, it was extremely difficult to maintain the quality of the raw silk. The solution to this problem was the fineness sensor installed in this automatic silk-reeling machine!
The fineness detector has a gap through which the reeled raw silk passes.
The thickness of the raw silk is detected by the friction generated between this gap and the raw silk, and if the thickness of the raw silk becomes thinner than the standard, additional cocoons are automatically added to maintain the thickness of the thread.

Next, I will explain about the automatic cocoon feeding and threading system.
The automatic cocoon supply and threading function automatically supplies cocoons when reeling the thread.
Until then, this work had been done by hand, so improvements were needed to increase silk-making efficiency.
The automatic cocoon feeding and threading function has solved this problem!

The plate-like thing surrounding the reeling section is called a cocoon feeder.
The cocoons are placed on a cocoon feeder and rotate around the reeling section like a rotating sushi machine.
When it is time to replenish cocoons, a rod called a tsuekan comes out of the reeling section and is used to pull up the cocoons from the cocoon feeder.
The Nissan HR-II automatic silk-reeling machine was able to feed and thread the cocoons approximately 20 times more efficiently than by hand!

At its peak, more than 90% of the country's total silk production was made by this silk-reeling machine.
This is a truly amazing silk-reeling machine!
In addition to the Nissan HR-II automatic silk-reeling machine, Nature and Science Museum has lots of other cool exhibits. I highly recommend you come and visit!

You can actually see the Nissan HR-II automatic silk-reeling machine in action at the Tokyo University of Agriculture and Technology Nature and Science Museum Video Library! Be sure to check it out!
